The Power Within
Updated: Jun 27
Most people think enthusiasm simply means excitement.
Yet the origin of the word reveals a far deeper meaning.
The word enthusiasm comes from the ancient Greek enthousiasmos, derived from two words:
En (ἐν) — within
Theos (θεός) — God
Literally translated, enthusiasm means:
"The God Within."
To the ancient Greeks, an enthusiastic person was not merely energetic or animated. He was inspired. He was driven by an inner force that gave him conviction, courage, and purpose.
They believed that an enthusiastic person was inspired by something greater than himself. Today, we might describe that source as God, the Creator, the Supreme Being, the Universe or Divine Intelligence. Whatever term one prefers, the principle remains unchanged: the greatest motivation comes from within.
This ancient insight is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.
In our search for success, we often look outward—to better strategies, stronger systems, greater resources, connections, and improved techniques. Yet the most powerful forces in life are found not outside us, but within us.
It is this force that drives your Power Engine—the inner fuel that transforms vision into action and purpose into achievement.
That force is enthusiasm.
Why?
Because enthusiasm is evidence of belief.
Think of some of the most inspiring speeches you have ever heard.
Whether it was Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream," Charlie Chaplin's powerful closing speech in The Great Dictator, or William Wallace's rallying cry in Braveheart, their impact did not come merely from the words themselves.
What made these speeches so powerful was the conviction behind them. The passion. The belief. The fire within.
People respond when they sense that a speaker genuinely believes in what he is saying. Enthusiasm transforms words into inspiration and ideas into action.
When a leader genuinely believes in a vision, people sense it.
When a business owner truly believes in the value of a product or service, customers feel it.
When a salesperson is convinced that what he offers can genuinely help others, confidence replaces hesitation.
When a person is inspired by a meaningful purpose, obstacles become challenges rather than excuses.
One of the world's most respected fundraising experts, Jerold Panas, author of the book Asking, identified enthusiasm as one of the most important qualities of successful fundraisers. People are naturally drawn to those who are inspired, committed, and convinced that what they are doing makes a difference.
Enthusiasm cannot be manufactured. It cannot be sustained through techniques alone. It is the natural result of having a clear purpose that you genuinely believe in.
Without purpose, people often lose energy, motivation fades, and actions become mechanical.
But when the purpose is clear, enthusiasm emerges naturally. One can truly move mountains.
Perhaps the real question is not whether you are enthusiastic.
Perhaps the question is:
What is inspiring you from within?
Because when people discover a purpose they truly believe in, they gain access to one of the most powerful forces available to them.
The Power Within.
Perhaps that is one of life's greatest pursuits: discovering what inspires us from within, seeking answers to the timeless questions—Who am I? and Why am I here?—and transforming that inspiration into meaningful achievements, worthwhile contributions, and a legacy that endures beyond our lifetime.
And that is my wish for you: that you find the purpose within you, discover what inspires you, pursue it wholeheartedly, and make this world a little better than you found it.
With respect,
